FIFA president Gianni Infantino was recently treated to the Dallas Cowboys’ hospitality during their game against the New York Jets. The invitation came from none other than Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. This marked Infantino’s first experience of a Cowboys game.
The AT&T Stadium is in the running to host the 2026 World Cup final. It’s up against MetLife Stadium in New Jersey and SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles. The final decision is expected to be announced by FIFA next month.
Jones has been vocal about his desire for AT&T Stadium to be chosen as the venue for the World Cup final. In a bid to impress Infantino, Jones introduced him to Cowboys’ star defensive player Micah Parsons before the game.
The 2026 World Cup will be historic as it will feature 48 teams for the first time. The tournament will consist of 12 groups of four teams each. The top two teams from each group along with the best eight third-place teams will progress to the round of 32. This means a record-breaking 104 matches will be played.
Infantino got a taste of what it would be like to host a major event at the Cowboys’ home ground. Over 90,000 fans filled the seats at AT&T Stadium during his visit.
Despite some criticism over delays in
deciding the host cities for the opening and final matches and setting
the tournament start date, FIFA anticipates record earnings of $11
billion from the 2026 World Cup. This will be the first time that three
countries - United States, Mexico and Canada - will jointly host the
tournament.
